BIRTH OF A RIDING CLUB - - - - -
Founded in 1940 by Mrs. Edna Hoff Manring, the Lakewood Riding Club is one of the oldest riding clubs in Colorado. From the original twenty charter members it grew over the years, to nearly 200 people in 1973. The first membership was made up of families whose horses were used at or near the Mississippi Stables, at Wadsworth Boulevard and Mississippi Avenue.
The group's activities offered something for almost any type of rider, young or old. The Lakewood Riding Club Parade Team was well known throughout the territory, and the club's two polo teams strived to meet their reputation. Each year several gymkhanas
(a meeting for athletic contests, mainly racing) were held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and the club's arena on Rooney Road, between Alameda and Morrison Road. They also engaged in trail rides, weekly ring-rides, moonlight rides, and various other social gatherings. (The Rooney Road arena was sold in 1992 due to the high cost of taxes and insurance.)
